Internal representations are the building blocks of subjective experience — they are how the mind encodes, stores, and processes information about the world. In NLP, the structure of internal representations (their submodalities) determines the emotional meaning and behavioral impact of any given thought or memory. Changing the structure of an internal representation changes its meaning.
